It’s the period of the Chinese Lunar New Year.
That according to the Lunar calendar, it is officially the new year for Chinese.
This is a time of pure festive celebrations, sort of like Christmas but for my family , it places more emphasis on family reunion, gambling, eating awesome food for days in a row and exchanging of blessings.
Well, its mostly like that for several others as well.
So, a set of superstitions are attached to the festive occasion as well.
One of which was to disassociate yourself with anything deemed unlucky.
Other superstitions include:
- No sweeping of the floor during the Lunar new year period because it is looked upon as though you are sweeping away your luck
-No buying of shoes during the 15 days of the lunar new year because the term shoes in Mandarin stands for blood.
One of the biggest taboo were funerals during that period.
And most unfortunately, I had to attend on during the period and I did get an earful for it.
In fact, after the reaction of the earful I received, I decided not to tell any of the elder generation that I was going to attend one.
A dear friend of mine had to go through a tough period, and I am glad to say, I was there with him along with several other good friends.
Witnessing the entire thing, made me remember several issues and of course, made me think of a whole lot more issues. It made me view people in a certain light, made me discover more about my friends and myself.
It’s only at these hard times do you then know who’s really important in your life.
